Stairlift Rentals vs. Buying: Which Should You Choose?
If you only need a stairlift for a short period of time or the upfront expense of buying a stairlift seems daunting, the option to rent a stairlift temporarily might be the right choice for you. Renting a stairlift is a great way to make your home more accessible without facing the high cost of home elevators or the intrusiveness of a platform lift. If you’re using walking aids to get up and down the stairs, a stairlift rental can help you to live safer at home. While buying is still the best long-term solution, renting provides unique flexibility
Why Should I Rent a Stairlift?
Stairlift (also know as “chairlift” or “stair chair”) rental programs can be a great short term solution to make your home accessible. If you’re recovering from an injury or procedure, a stairlift can offer support until you get your mobility back. However, it’s important to consider how long you’ll need the stairlift. If you continue to rent for a long period of time, the cost of renting might actually add up to more than the full price of a stairlift. Fortunately, Stannah’s rental program offers a variety of options to accommodate a wide-range of needs. With Stannah, renting a stairlift gives you the ability to “try before you buy,” so you can be sure that you really need a stairlift before committing to purchase.
Maybe all you’re looking for is a short-term fix; maybe you’re recovering from an illness or temporary condition and will be back to your old self in a matter of weeks; or maybe a family member is coming to stay and you want them to feel independent in your home. Whatever the reason, we have the solution: our stairlift rental programs give you the flexibility to rent a stairlift for as long as you need.
Benefits of Renting a Stairlift vs Buying
- Lowest cost option for short-term use
- Option to buy later
- Free service during rental period
How Does a Stairlift Rental Work?
Short-term stairlift rental
A stairlift monthly rental plan means you get all the mobility access benefits of a Stannah stairlift, without having to make the full purchase upfront. After your stair survey, you can rent a stairlift for a standard amount of time (usually six months), before purchasing or continuing to rent month-to-month. Your payment at the time of installation covers your first six months and all labor (installation, service and removal) while you’re renting. You won’t have to make monthly payments during the initial rental period, but after six months, you’ll have to choose what to do next.
What Happens After Stairlift Rental Period is Over?
Rent-to-own stairlift rental
After six months, you can choose to continue renting, remove the stairlift or purchase it for the remaining balance. A major advantage of our rent-to-own program is that it spreads out the costs, so you don’t have to pay for your stairlift all at once. Renting a stairlift before purchasing also gives you six months to try it out before committing to a full purchase. You can still decide to purchase the stairlift later on, but it’s important to note that if you continue renting after six months, your monthly payments will not go towards the purchase price.
No matter what your personal requirements are, we will try our best to accommodate you. That is why we offer rental options on a range of new and reconditioned models.
Stairlift Rental Prices: How Much Does it Cost to Rent a Stairlift?
Renting a stairlift is a quick and easy process. But pricing can be difficult to gauge without seeing your stairs. After you’ve had an initial stair survey, we’ll give you an exact quote on both the rental and purchase price of your stairlift. If you choose to rent, all we need is a one-time payment, which covers:
- Your 6-month rental
- Installation
- Administration
- Service & Removal during the rental period
Again, the initial rental payment and the purchase price depend on the model and stairlift options you choose. These will be determined when we measure your stairs. Once you’ve made that payment, you’ll be all set for six months. If you continue renting after six months, there will be a set monthly fee for as long as you’d like to keep your lift. You can cancel the agreement at any time and are only committed to one month’s stairlift rent in advance, however, the initial payment and any past payments are non-refundable.
Stairlift Rental Service
While you’re renting (whether during the initial rental period or long term), you won’t have to worry about any repair or service costs. Whenever you decide you don’t need your temporary stairlift any more, we’ll come and remove it, free of charge. However, it’s important to note that if you purchase your stairlift, you may be charged for removal.
Free service is a major benefit of renting and gives many people peace-of-mind, knowing their stairlift is taken care of. While we take care of the servicing and call-out costs for the duration of your rental period, it’s important to note that this free service is only offered to stairlift renters. If you decided to purchase your stairlift outright, you may want to consider an extended warranty.

Our rental program covers our full line of stairlifts, including:
As mentioned above, the rental fee covers installation, removal and any stairlift repairs needed while you’re renting. This is true, regardless of the model and stairlift options you choose.
